15 Computer Tips and Tricks We Should Know


If you are a daily desktop-user then you always looking for new tricks to boost your productivity. I have compiled some useful tricks that might sharpen your skills and boost your productivity. It might happen some of these you already know about, but not about all maybe.

You will find all kinds of tricks that will be helpful in operating your desktop, browsing, file management, productivity tips, typing tricks and keeping your files and data more secure.

1. "Ctrl+Z," I think every desktop user knows about this key combination. We mostly use this shortcut keys during typing the document to undo the deleted word. Do you know this hotkey combination could also undo our action? If we accidentally deleted any file we can use this Ctrl+Z key combination to bring back to its native location.

2.  If you had accidentally closed the tab that you don't wish to. Then you can use the key combinations from the keyboard to bring it back "Ctrl+Shift+T" the most recent closed tab.

3.  If you have to open the task manager then most of the user either will search the task manager from the start menu or use the "Alt+Ctrl+Delete" keys combination to open the task manager from the options. There is one more shortcut key to this shortcut way "Ctrl+Shift+Esc" will directly open the task manager on your screen.

4.  To start searching for any file or folder we will go to start menu and type in the search bar, is quite useful and quick to search. There is one more way to search your file within your system, just need to use the "Windows Key+F" combination to begin your search with filters.

5. If you are a computer an engineer then you must know about this trick. If someone says I have to block the access of a website in the system, you shouldn't worried about how to do this.  You just need to instruct your system through "Run box", type "%windir%\system32\drivers\etc"  in event viewer or you can use the same path in your C: drive to do the same. Now open the "host" file in notepad and type the web address twice you want to block following the IP address 

For instance : facebook.com




Save the notepad and user will not be able to access these two  websites.

6.  We can encrypt our files or folder to keep away access in other systems after getting stolen. For encrypting the data, you have to open the properties of the desired file or folder, now click on the "Advanced" on the bottom right corner. Now click on the "encrypt content to secure data" checkbox. Click ok and apply the settings, this encrypted folder can only open on this system. No one can open this folder on other after being copied.

This feature can only work if we have already installed or Pre-installed BitLocker in the system.

7. A "GodMode " folder will allow you to universal settings of your system from a single folder. You can access each and every possible settings category within this folder like Action centre, Administrative tools, Backup and restore, Devices and printers etc. We just need to create a folder with the name GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}. After it, the folder's icon will change in to "control panel" icon, now you can access all the systems settings within a single folder.

8. Almost every computer user knows to toggle between windows by pressing the key combination Alt+Tab. We can also toggle between the tabs of the browser by using the keys combination Ctrl+Tab.

9.  To close the browser's tab, we can also use the middle button or scroll button of the mouse to close the tab directly. You just need to place your cursor on the tab and press the scroll button to close it.


10. To minimize all the windows you have open just use the key combinations "Windows button+D", to save your valuable time to minimize each opened windows. There is one more key combination for doing the same  "Windows button+M" this will not allows you to restore all the minimized windows.

11. If you just want to look up your system information we usually go through computer properties. To get it in a quicker, press windows key+ Pause/break, to appear system information.


12.  For using special character and foreign symbols in your writing content we have "character map" utility that helps us to use every special character and even provides Alt + num codes. You can get character map by searching it start menu.

For instance: The Copyright Sign(©) can be made by using key combination Alt+0169.

13. Whenever we have to make quick short notes during browsing that we don't want to save we have to head to notepad.  Which is too annoying to minimize and restoring the windows every time. To get rid of this tiresome process just copy/paste this code  "data:text/html, <html contenteditable>" in a new tab, now you can use the browser's tab as a note-maker. ( I have tested it on Opera and Chrome it might be possible it works on chrome only).

14.  On starting up of your workstation you have to open lots of programs and files that bother you every time. Now, this trick is for you, in Windows 7, on start menu search "startup" right click and opens up the folder. Now copy/paste the programs or files you want to open on your system's startup, whether its any kind of software, media file or any kind of document, the file will be open up on every startup. For Windows 10 users, they have to run "shell:startup" will open the startup folder, you have to repeat the process of windows 7.

15.  Have you ever think about our PC is smart enough to shut down automatically? Most users would never have tried it, Let's know how we can do it. You have to create a shortcut, now opens it and type "shutdown -s -t 3600" (for 1 hour), your PC will shut down after an hour. If you want to cancel your scheduled turn off run "shutdown -a" in RUN box. Whenever you open the shutdown shortcut, "countdown" to system turn off will start.
